Cool Warrior
A Wise Saying about Warriors

About This Guide

This guide was written for a few reasons. One is because I've always wanted to use what I know about Warriors to write a guide, and the wiki gives me that chance. But the biggest reason is because I want to be able to help lots of people learn how to play MapleStory, not just the newbie who I meet in Perion and who asks me "Where can I find Dances with Balrog???" Now I can simply point them towards the wiki, and they can find all the information they need! This is actually only Volume 1 of my Warrior guides. It's the "Beginner" section. Sections for second job advance are forthcoming.

The Road to Becoming a Warrior

The warrior job tree.

Why Be a Warrior?

For those of you trying to decide whether or not to be a warrior, READ THIS FIRST. If you've already decided to take the leap into the warrior realm, read this anyway! Now, "Why Be a Warrior?" Lets start with a basic Pros-Cons comparison...

Pros

  • Warriors do the most damage of any class in the game.
  • Warriors have the most Health (HP) of any class in the game.
  • Their third job skills are very flashy, impressive, and overall cool looking.
  • They are the only class which has a multi-enemy hit skill in the 1st job (excluding Pirates with their Somersault Kick), namely Slash Blast.
  • Attacking up close will not reduce damage, unlike other classes (swinging a Bow or a Claw)
  • Does not use as much money (Arrows (infinite for bowman during second job due to soul arrow), Stars, HP Pots for Bandit, MP Pots for Mages)
  • Most defense in the game
  • Aren't prone to KSers because they have a high melee attack, which means that monsters can be OSKOed (One-Shot Knocked Out)

Cons

  • Warriors have no ranged attacks until the third job advancement (Level 70).
  • Warriors have the least MP points of any class in the game (except for Dragon Knights).
  • The potions required to keep a Warrior alive and using skills becomes very expensive.
  • Two handed weapons, spears, and polearms are all very slow compared to other job's equipment
  • When you reach third job, Warriors are known to have the most amount of damage of the four jobs.
  • Equips cost a lot

The Warrior is not like getting handed the world on a silver platter. You have to train hard, and level up, and become more powerful. At first the Warrior may seem slow, even weak, but if you keep going, you will eventually find yourself in control of the most powerful class in the game. Doing the most damage isn't enough to catch your interest? Well, how about this; the weapons a Warrior can use after the second job advancement look SWEET.

Leveling the Beginner

When you create your character, you will automaticly have a good 'roll', because they patched the dice rolling away. This will mean you have 4/4 int/luk, which you should NEVER ADD ANY IN!
When you actually start playing, there are some beginning quests that teach you how to play. Refer to the Beginner Guide on how to do those. When you are ready to begin training, go to Snail Hunting Ground I and start killing Green Snails. Soon enough you will "Level Up!" and be level 2. Hit "A" to display your stats, and at the bottom you'll see a white box with the number 5 in it. The "5" is the number of Ability Points (AP) you have to add to your stats this level.

Now, here is the most important rule for warriors (veterans excluded (people who are level 30+ and STR builds)):

DEX = 2x your level

This means that at level 2, you need to have 4 points in DEX. At level 5, you'll need 10 points in DEX, etc. Because you already have at least 4 points in DEX, add all 5 points into STR.

All points you don't put in DEX go into STR.

At level 3, you need 6 DEX. Add points to DEX to get that, and add the rest to STR. When you've evened up your DEX with your level (2x), every level after, add 2 AP to DEX and 3 AP to STR. This keeps the 2 x (level) ratio for DEX.

~Clarification~

Let’s say your starting DEX is equal to 7.

Level 2: 2 X 2 = 4: 5 points into STR

Level 3: 3 X 2 = 6: 5 points into STR

Level 4: 4 X 2 = 8: 1 point into DEX, 4 points into STR

Now, here is where the formula comes in.

Level 4: DEX is equal to 8.

Level 5: 5 X 2 = 10: 2 points into DEX, 3 into STR

Level 5: DEX is equal to 10.

Level 6: 6 X 2 = 12: Two points into DEX, 3 into STR.

As you can see, the formula shown here works! Your DEX is equal to twice your level.

  • Note: The average DEX now is around 60

Being the strongest class on Maple Island, you will quickly move up from Green Snails to Blue, then Red. Around level 8, you'll even be able to kill the large Orange Mushrooms in a few areas. Kill whatever monster takes 1-3 hits, and doesn't wear you out too fast. Once you've reached level 9, STOP. Why not level 10? Because the quest A Lesson on Job Advancement gives you enough EXP to become level 10. Furthermore you do NOT want to reach level 11 yet. Now, head towards Southperry to become a Swordsman...

Becoming a Swordsman

In Southperry, go to the right of the map and talk to Shanks, and go to
Dances With Balrog
Victoria Island. You'll end up in Lith Harbor, on a boat. Hop off, and talk to Olaf, somewhere in the middle of the map. Finish off his quest, and tell him that you want to become a warrior. You won't be one just yet, you'll need to find Dances with Balrog. Now go to the NPC in the "TICKETS" Booth, to the left near the boat you just hopped off. He is in between "Teo" and "Jane". Give him 120 mesos, and tell him to take you to Perion, the city of
Minimap of Perion, with the portal leading to Dances with Balrog indicated in red.
Warriors. In Perion, walk, jump, and climb your way to the top of the map, and enter the shrine you find there. Talk to the guy sitting on the floor, Dances with Balrog, and tell him you want to be a Warrior. After checking that...
  • You are level 10
  • You have 35 STR

(You should have both of these if you've followed the guide)

...he will make you a warrior. You will get a modest amount of HP added to your max HP, the Warrior's Skill Book I (not in your inventory, but in your Skills page, opened with K, which you should already know), 1 Skill Point, and a short lecture about the way of the Warrior. Feel like you want to spend that point immediatly to see what it's all about? Maybe we should make sure you do not make any irreversible mistakes, so read on first.

Now that you've layed the foundation, its time to start creating...

Swordman Skill Builds

Main article: Category:Warrior Skill Guides

There are four general skill builds for a Warrior. These are:

  • Standard Build: Followed by the majority of Warriors
  • Alternate Standard Build: very similar to the standard build
  • Iron Body Build: providing extra defense at the expense of not maxing both attacking skills (Slash Blast, Power Strike before level 30)
  • Low HP Build: you end up with about 500-1000 less HP than other warriors, but level faster from 10-30. Very few people use this build.

The Standard Build is highly recommended, as it has been proven to be very effective. However, you should pick the build that you feel will suit your character the most.

Standard Build

This is the standard build for Warriors. This build is the most effective and recommended of the Warrior builds, as you gain as much HP as possible while also maxing out your vital skills.

Alternate Standard Build

This build is similar to the standard build. With this build, you will max Power Strike before points are applied to Slash Blast.

Mob Alternate build

This build is similar to the standard build. With this build, you will max Slash Blast before you max Power Strike.

Iron Body Build

The skill Iron Body will be used frequently with this build. It provides an extra boost to your defence, while losing the ability to max out a vital skill, Slash Blast. This build is not recommended, because of the uselessness of Iron Body at later levels, but is still an option to go with.

Low HP Build

With this build, points will be applied to your two attacking skills, Power Strike and Slash Blast. This is done before maxing HP Increase, which will result in a significant loss of HP. While gaining the extra attack boost during the early levels, this build is still highly unrecommended.

Places to Train

This isn't a hard-and-fast "You must train here!" guide. It's just a general suggestion of good places to train around certain levels. Fight whatever you're comfortable with, and can gain exp quickly from. If you can kill it in 1-2 hits with (or without) Power Strike, it's probably good to train on. You may also want to experiment by trying different areas, which is better than just sticking to whatever is stated here.

  • Levels 1-10: It is best for you to fight at Maple Island until level 10, training on Green/Blue/Red Snails. You might want to take on some Orange Mushrooms for faster EXP and if you get 10 Orange Mushroom Caps (find Orange Mushrooms in Amherst) and 30 Blue Snail Shells, talk to Biggs in Southperry and he'll award you with either a Razor or a Fruit Knife.
  • Levels 10-15: Still kinda weak. Snails are for fast EXP, but start fighting Slimes, Stumps and Dark Stumps!
  • Levels 15-20: You're getting stronger! Fight some Slimes and more Dark Stumps for FAST EXP! As you progress into about lvl 17-20 you might want to switch to the slime tree and train there permanently until lvl 21, this fits perfectly for a fast swinging swordsman. You could also mob on Octopuses near Kerning City.
  • Levels 20-25: Pigs and Ribbon Pigs are your monsters of choice, and can be found in abundance at Pig Beach. You can also train in Ellinia danger zones. You can find Green and Horned Mushrooms there. It's pretty easy to kill if you level correctly on your skills and stats. Don't try Kerning City Party Quest yet because most people won't want you... yet. And you are quite weak anyway, missing almost all monsters. Do you have nice friends who are willing to help you all way to succes? Read some PQ guides on around here, and try to make the best of KPQ.
  • Levels 25-30: Get into a Party Quest group if you can. Although, some find that Horned Mushrooms and Wild Boars are good EXP for level 25-30.
Image of a level 26 warrior, using Power Strike
  • Levels 30-35: Zombie Mushrooms, Wild Boars, Jr. Sentinels and Horned Mushrooms are a good choice. Leatty in Orbis Tower are also good - slow, and they drop the level 35 armors. Another Great place is Brown Teddies of Ludibrium, they have decent drops and mesos and are GREAT sources of EXP. Again, you may not fully be ready for Monster Carnival PQ, but just like KPQ, you can atleast try to get a nice party, after reading guides, so you don't lose your way.
  • Levels 35-38: Wild Boars, Axe Stumps and Dark Axe Stumps in Rocky Road III, it's fairly good EXP. Evil Eye in the Evil Eye Caves are good exp, as are Dark Leattyss in Orbis Tower. The Dark Leattys drop the level 40 armors. Though by now CPQ is recommended, as you are getting closer to being able to hit the monsters in CPQ.
  • Levels 38-46: Jr. Grupin (and other Jr. Cats: Jr. Cellion, and Jr. Lioner) will be perfect for you. Although Jr. Grupins have the best cat drops, and can be found in Orbis. Please, do NOT even TRY ludi PQ, as no-one does that these days, and CPQ is 100% more recommended for your level.
  • Levels 46-50: You are somewhat strong so you might want to stay at cats until 50. Though CPQ is most likely the way to go (again).
  • Levels 50-55: Kill Zombie Lupins. These are not only quite easy, they also drop some of the best items in the game compared to their level and you can make some great money out of it. You're pretty strong now! Crocos and Stone Gollems are also good. From my own experience, the Ellin Forest PQ is no good. You may rather try to find a Ludi Maze PQ party, starting at level 51, though this might be hard to get too.
  • Levels 55-60: You might want to fight at Drake's Meal Table and Dark Stone Gollems for now, maybe until 62. Wow, you've grown in strength, little one! Onward! You may want to kill Jr. Yetis at these levels.
  • Levels 60-65: Very strong. If you like, you can stay at the Drakes, or move onto Jr. Yeti (Transformed) in Ice Valley I, or Yetis in Icy Cold Field! Also go to Wild Cargo Area to kill Wild Cargo. I think at this point you should go to Dark Yetis area or Tauromacis (with a party if possible).
  • Levels 65-70: Train on Transformed Yetis and Coolie Zombies. The EXP is quite good, 390 per kill. Also, this is the time to do the quest Nick, the Son of Scadur the Hunter to get a Gaia's Cape. You may want to stock up on potions for the Cerebes!
  • Level 70-80: Third job! You can take on Yeti and Pepe! Or how about some Lycanthropes at level 75? Also try Werewolves for the level 70 polearm drop if you're a Dragon Knight but be careful. From here, it's all about FUN!
  • Level 80-90: Jr. Balrog is NOT the way to go, as he only spawns every few hours, it will be SLOW EXP. Fight at Lycanthropes, Werewolves, and Dark Yeti and Pepe.
  • 90-100: Balrog is STILL not a good idea, as he sucks. By now, you should probabaly go to Bains. The EXP is tremendous. You should go fight Dark Yeti & Pepe/Werewolf at these levels.
  • 100+: Balrog hardly gives anything now. Crimson Balrogs stink. Bains are the greatest choice. Zakum is a viable option, provided you have a mega stash of potions. P.S. You shouldn't need my help from here on because you should be a master warrior by now =P.

The Second Job Advancement

The Test Itself

Once you have reached level 30, you are permitted to take the Second Job Advancement test. Passing the test will result in a new skillbook, added HP and/or MP points, and a new job title. It is advised that the test is taken as soon as you reach level 30, because taking it later would result in a loss of valuble second job SP.

In order to take the test, you must have used all of your SP from the first job advancement. Once you have added all your SP to your satisfaction head to Perion and talk to the NPC Dances With Barlog again. After a short talk you will receive the Letter of Recommendation. Travel two screens to the left of Perion, to the area where the music is different. At the top of this area is a portal. Enter the portal and continue to travel upwards until you find the Warrior Job Instructor.

Before talking to the Warrior Job Instructor, you should stock up on a lot of potions and equip your best equipment. Once you feel you are ready talk to him, and you will be transported into a hidden map. This hidden map will contain Lupins and Fire Boars (weakened) which you must kill. Defeating these monsters gains no experience, but some of them drop Marbles. Collect 30 of these Marbles and talk to the NPC in that map to clear the test. In order to be successful a fair amount of accuracy is needed. 33 accuracy will result in hitting the monsters 50% of the time, so it is advised that your accuracy be at least that. Try to avoid the Lupins and go for the Fire Boars, as the Fire Boars have no long range attack. This is the most difficult job advancement of all 4 classes due to the banana magic attack of the Lupin. If you got any earrings from Party Quest (Kerning City) or Alex the Runaway Kid, do wear them as they give magic resistance. Remember that you are not allowed to restock potions midway through the test, if you run out of potions, you'll just have to get out and restart the quest another time.

Upon clearing the exam, you will obtain the Proof of a Hero. Take this to Dances With Barlogs and you will be allowed to choose your second job title. You will then receive 1 SP to spend on your new skills, and some HP and/or MP. If you are having trouble deciding which path to take, look on below for some information on each of the three paths.

Once you have passed the exam, simply resume your normal training and chatting. Another test like this will not be presented for another 40 levels, which will take quite some time to traverse. Though you can use the 2nd job SP for 1st job skills, it is advised that you spend your SP on second job skills because they tend to be more useful than those skills found in the first job.

Picking a Class

The Fighter

The Fighter is an offensive, high damage warrior. The Fighter's skill Rage, unique to the job, will raise the damage done by a large amount at the cost of a small reduction in defense. Fighters will also learn Power Guard, which (when maxed) reduces damage done by 40%, in addition to sending that damage back at the offending monster. Fighters can use either swords or axes, both one handed and two handed, although most Fighters tend to use swords because of the more stable damage.

In the third job, Fighters become Crusaders. Crusaders have the ability to deal huge (5 digit) damage in a single hit. They charge up their Combo Attack with normal Power Strikes and then use a finishing skill such as Panic or Coma to deal major damage. Crusaders specialize in single monster destruction with their massively damaging hits.

Pros:

  • Fighters have more HP than Pages and Spearmen, or any other class at 2nd Job for that matter
  • They get Rage, raising the damage done by a large amount
  • Good at killing individual monsters
  • Swords are generally fast
  • crusaders can use roar to attack the visable screen(when maxed attacks most of the map even the parts u cant see on screen)

Cons:

  • Axes have low range.
  • Less MP than all other 2nd Job classes.

The Page

The Page is a more defensive, soloing warrior. Pages are the least commonly chosen Warrior class because of their lack of power. The lack of party skills means that most of a Page's training will be done alone. They share the Power Guard skill, as well as having the skill Threaten, which (when maxed) reduces the physical attack and defense abilites of monsters that it is cast on by 20 (which is a significant amount). Pages use either swords or blunt weapons, with swords being once again more popular.

The third job presents the opportunity for the Page to become the White Knight. White Knights do not do huge amounts of damage but are considered more versatile than other warrior classes because they have the ability to charge their weapons with fire, ice, or lightning, gaining constant elemental advantages and damage bonuses on every hit. The skill Charge Blow is like an elementally charged Slash Blast, doing large damage and stunning the monsters. White Knights are sometimes considered superior to other warrior classes because they can kill mobs and solo, unlike the other two, therefore specializing in being versatile.

Pros:

  • Higher HP than Spearmen
  • Higher MP than Fighters
  • Threaten is a fantastic defensive and offensive skill.

Cons:

  • Lower HP than Fighters
  • Lower MP than Spearmen
  • Low power

The Spearman

The Spearman is considered a mob control warrior. Because of the long range of Spearman weapons simple skills like Slash Blast become very useful. Spearmen have a skill called Hyper Body, which raises the HP and MP of all party members by a large amount. Having this skill maxed makes the spearman a great party character, particularly to mages whose HP is lower than most other classes. They also have a move called Iron Will, which raises defense of party members, but many consider this skill useless. Spearmen use spears or polearms for a large but formidable damage range.

The Spearman becomes the Dragon Knight in the third job. Dragon Knights use specialized moves to deal large amounts of damage to multiple monsters, resulting in a perfect mob control character. The skill Dragon Roar deals heavy damage to all enemies in the screen (at the cost of a large amount of HP), and Dragon Blood raises the attack power by a large amount. Dragon Knights specialize in their ability to do heavy damage to many monsters at once.

See Hybrid Spearman also. A Hybrid Spearman masters both spears and polearms.

Pros:

  • Spears and Polearms have a long range, thus Spearmen can hit enemies from a longer distance than Pages or Fighters
  • Higher MP than Fighters
  • Higher HP than Pages
  • Get Hyper Body, a great party skill, especially with Mages
  • one of two 3rd Job classes to obtain a skill which attacks a whole screen of monsters (Dragon Knight and crusader)

Cons:

  • Lower HP than Fighters
  • Lower MP than Pages
  • One of the slower classes
  • Can't equip shields due to spears and polearms being 2-handed
  • A very large damage range, can hinder the Spearman at times
